Smile Correction Surgery

For chin and dental occlusion

There is division between before and after orthodontics for surgery but this depends on each individual case. In most cases where patients receive surgery, they also need to have brace. Determining when surgery should be conducted will be determined after patient analysis.

What is smile correction surgery?

Primary jaw surgery

Double Jaw Surgery – change in the location of both top and bottom jaw

Protrusion surgery – change in the location of the teeth

Reason for alternating between orthodontics and surgery

Double Jaw Surgery – change in the location of both top and bottom jaw

Protrusion surgery – change in the location of the teeth

Before surgery

right after surgery

after surgery, during orthodontics

after completion of both surgery and orthodontics

Although the surgery went well, the occlusion (bite) is incorrect, so orthodontics is needed in this case

-Needed to stabilize and restore the function to the teeth and correct occlusion after the change in the position of the jaw and teeth

-Needed to stabilize the masticatory and facial muscles according to the changes in the length and position of the jaw

Surgery first vs surgery after

Surgery first (jaw surgery > orthodontics)

If surgery first is possible, it is done first; after surgery, the length of orthodontics is about 6months to a year.

Pros of
surgery first

  1. Immediate change to appearance. As the deformed bone structure is corrected and made to look like normal, the part that was a complex for patients is quickly resolved and helps patients find a new sense of confidence.
  1. This is not applicable to all cases, surgery is only done when it is possible, according to each individual case.
  2. When partaking in treatment that consists of surgery orthodontics is complete, the chin can look more protruding or deformities may be highlighted as the teeth move during the orthodontic treatment period; the patient would not be subjected to this with the surgery first method.

Things to consider about surgery first

  1. After surgery is decided upon, a more meticulous analysis of the patient’ case is required for the surgical plan as the surgery will require the prediction of how the teeth will move during orthodontics; the cooperation between the orthodontic and surgery team will be very important during this time.
  2. Surgery is not applicable to all cases and is only performed on cases when it is applicable.
  3. After surgery, the patient’s occlusion may be off but will stabilize with the progression of orthodontics.
  4. It is important to note that microscopic asymmetry may not be fully corrected even with the completion of surgery and orthodontics.

Surgery after Orthodontics (orthodontics > jaw surgery > orthodontics)

In the event that it is determined that the surgery first method is impossible (In the cases that surgery is forcibly performed, poor surgical results may incur due to unstable states persisting)

Orthodontic treatment is done so that the teeth occlusion fits to a certain degree after surgery; surgery is then performed, and the patient undergoes orthodontic treatment after surgery to correct minor occlusion problems.

The treatment time for orthodontics before surgery is around 6 months to a year and after surgery is around 6 months.

Pros of surgery after orthodontics

  1. Through pre-surgery orthodontics, the teeth are moved to achieve good occlusion after surgery and to prevent problems with the masticatory function after surgery.
  2. Applicable to all cases.
  3. As it is not a new type of surgery, there are many research papers available and the surgery results are stable.

things to
consider

  1. 1.The length of treatment time can take a long time.

  2. Patient can become stressed during the pre-surgery orthodontic period as the teeth move and deterioration of the facial expression may incur.

  3. If the teeth have not moved enough during the pre-surgery orthodontic period, the amount of movement possible during surgery is limited, causing insufficient skeletal movement.
